In April 2018, IMES International completed inspection work for the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a UK charity which gives able and disabled people the chance to be part of a working crew onboard a tall ship.
Aboard the Lord Nelson and Tenacious, the Jubilee Sailing Trust has taken more than 17,000 disabled people to sea, with more than 5,000 crew in wheelchairs. These two ships are the only tall ships in the world which can offer people of all abilities an opportunity to sail around the world on a tall ship. Many of the crew have disabilities such as cerebral palsy, hearing or visual impairments, or have sustained serious injuries from serving with the Forces or accidents. The Trust’s voyages range from a day of sailing in the Solent, month-long passages to the Caribbean, tall ship races around the UK and two-month extreme sailing passages around the infamous Cape Horn.
The Trust is based in Southampton, allowing our specialist technicians to support their operations as they prepare for these voyages. Since 2015, IMES’ technicians have revamped the lifting equipment management system on each ship and conducted regular examinations and testing of all lifting assets.
“Working with the Jubilee Sailing Trust is an experience and opportunity like no other,” said Glenn Ward, Director of Engineering and Inspection at IMES. “The Trust gives people of all abilities the chance to overcome real challenges and achieve what they may have thought impossible. It’s a real privilege to be part of the team of supporters who make these chances happen, and we’re looking forward to working with the Trust in the future.”
Andy Spark, Head of Programmes at the Jubilee Sailing Trust, said: “Our sail training voyages take folk out of their nice, safe homes and places them in a risky environment, where Mother Nature is the boss. We can’t achieve this safely without experts like IMES. They have rebuilt our lifting gear registers and inspected and tested every item on both ships – that’s no mean feat, and we’re immensely grateful for their support.”
Richard Cruse, Captain at the Trust, added: “IMES has given us a professional, knowledgeable and courteous service and have made a great effort to find a safe, cost effective and efficient solution to our LOLER compliance. My highest of compliments to the IMES team.”
